Using Remote Desktop Connection and xrdp to Remote into Raspberry Pi to Control PulseBlaster

This is a guide on how to use a Windows operating system (OS) machine to remote into a Raspberry Pi within the same network using xrdp and Remote Desktop Connection. By doing so, the user will be able to control SpinCore devices connected to the Raspberry Pi.

In this guide, the SpinCore devices are connected to a Raspberry Pi 4 with Raspberry Pi OS (full).

Procedure to be Performed on the Raspberry Pi

Updating the Raspberry Pi

To update the Raspberry Pi with the latest packages, run the following command in the terminal:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade


Installing xrdp on the Raspberry Pi

To install the xrdp package on the Raspberry Pi, run the following command within terminal:

sudo apt install xrdp


SpinAPI Linux Download and Installation Instructions

SpinAPI is required for the SpinCore devices to function. The SpinAPI package along with the installation instructions can be found on our SpinAPI web page which is linked below:

Adding a User on Raspberry Pi

It is optional to add a new user if there is already an account with a password to be used for remote login. If a new user profile is desired, run the following command:

sudo adduser <USERNAME>

<USERNAME> is to be replaced by the name of the user profile.


Retrieving Internet Protocol (IP) Address on Raspberry Pi

The IP address of the machine is required for remoting. To get the address, run the following command on the Raspberry Pi:

hostname -I


Procedure to be Performed on the Windows Machine

Remoting to the Raspberry Pi from Windows Machine

    1. Open Remote Desktop Connection by using Windows Search
      Note: Remote Desktop Connection is not available for Home Editions of Windows

    2. Enter the IP address of the Raspberry Pi in the "Computer:" field and click Connect

    3. Enter the username and password of a user of the Raspberry Pi and click OK
