POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES
Building upon current research strengths, the City
University of New York has established the Institute for Macromolecular
Assemblies (MMA), positioned at the interface of chemistry, biology,
physics and engineering to address both fundamental and applied
questions at the frontier of life sciences research. Based at the MMA’s
City College home campus and the New York Structural Biology Center in
Manhattan, the Research Associate will report to the Institute Director
and have responsibilities as follows:
• Managing a 10-person research team working in the areas of molecular
biophysics of lipid transport, structure and development of protective
plant polymers, molecular structure of fungal melanins, and nuclear
magnetic resonance (NMR) technology;
• Investigating interactions of fatty acid-binding proteins with
peroxisome proliferators and model membranes, including engineering and
production of proteins enriched with stable isotopes and high-field NMR
studies of macromolecular structure;
• Training and mentoring team members to express and purify proteins,
to assess their interactions, and to do multidimensional NMR
spectroscopy;
• Designing and conducting self-initiated research projects within the
scope of MMA activities;
• Assisting with the preparation of external grant applications and
manuscripts for publication;
• Organizing MMA research workshops and tutorials at CCNY;
• Serving as technical liaison to the Institute director, participating
faculty, core facility managers, Science Division information
technology staff, and Institute Executive Administrative Assistant
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or allied
fields, with one or more years of postdoctoral experience, is required.
Scientific expertise is required in one or more of the following areas:
protein overexpression and purification, biomolecular NMR spectroscopy
and structure determination, biophysical measurements.
The ideal staff candidate will also have:
• Experience in research laboratory management, including training,
mentoring, and supervision of Ph.D. students;
• Experience with biomolecular NMR protocols on Varian and Bruker
spectrometers, computational structural analysis and visualization;
• Strong oral and written communication skills;
• Ability to foster technical support, proactive troubleshooting,
interchange of ideas, and scientific productivity;
• Initiative, self-motivation, resourcefulness, sound judgment,
professionalism;
• Ability to work well with faculty, students and co-workers.
